Today, most tourists arriving in New York are wondering how to get from the airport to New York and which method to choose?

New York is large in area and one of the most visited. More than 8 million people live in this city and approximately 50 million come annually for tourism and sightseeing, so the question of the method of transportation to the city itself remains relevant.

New York is the largest city in the USA

New York is a highly developed tourist city with a lot of traffic, so this city is home to:

  • John F. Kennedy Airport. One of the largest airports for passenger and cargo transportation. It is located 19 km from Manhattan.
  • Newark Liberty. The airport terminal is located within Newark and Elizabeth, 24 km from the Midtown area of New York.
  • LaGuardia. This airport, unlike the above ones, operates primarily on domestic routes. Most flights are concentrated within the United States of America.

How to get there from JFK Airport

John F. Kennedy Airport was named after the 35th President of the United States in 1963. Before that, it was called Idlewald Airport after the golf course on which it was built back in 1942.

Map of JFK Airport, New York

The John F. Kennedy airport receives international flights, including Russian ones, so the bulk of Russian citizens fly here. Read how to get it on our website.

Today, for people with great financial resources, the US Helicopter company offers a helicopter rental service to accompany tourists to their desired destination in New York. The exact amount of such a service is unknown, but we can safely say that it is calculated in hundreds of dollars. Not everyone can afford to fly from the airport by helicopter to New York.

There are several ways to get from New York airport to the city itself:

Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. If a person is in New York for the first time, then he should use a taxi so that, firstly, you don’t get lost in an unknown city, and secondly, you get to your desired location on time. If a person has luggage, then the taxi driver will help you carry the cargo to the car for a small fee.

Transfer

The transfer is great for people who don’t know the city or. When ordering a transfer, the driver meets the person at the specified time in the parking lot with a sign in his hands.

The only downside is that the car must be pre-ordered. You can order an individual transfer from the airport to the city on the website https://kiwitaxi.ru/usa/new+york+airport+kennedy-%3Enew+york?pap=57adbb36f2232.

The average cost of a trip is $130. An economy class car will cost about $110, and transporting a group of people (no more than 7) by minibus will cost $200-220. Travel time from the airport to the city takes 80 minutes. You can get from the airport to New York by car in 1 hour 20 minutes.

Bus

Traveling from the airport by shuttle bus is perfect for those who want to see New York.

The bus station is located in Terminal 5. Bus routes Q10, Q3 and B15 depart regularly from this bus station. The cost of the trip is 2.75 US dollars. Travel time: 1 hour 40 minutes.

Regular bus routes:

  • Q 10: air port - Kew Gardens (area - Queens).
  • Q 3: air port - Jamaica metro station (district - Queens).
  • B 15: air port - Bedfort (Brooklyn).

Buses run 24 hours a day every half hour.

The shuttle from the airport goes to the center of Manhattan. The cost of a bus ride is 16 US dollars. Children under 3 years of age do not pay for travel. You can get from the airport to the center in an hour and a half.

The shuttle departs every 20-30 minutes from 5.00 to 23.30.

Shuttle fare: 16 USD

Train

Trains depart from Jamaica MRT station. This train takes you to Penn Station in 40 minutes. Train tickets cost US$10. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office at the railway station.

Train ticket costs 10 USD

The USA has a very developed public transport system. This:
- metro;
— buses (city and intercity);
— electric trains and long-distance trains;
— in New York there is even a cable car));
- and in San Francisco - a tram;);
- taxi.

Because I live in New York, then, of course, I will talk more about it. But I think in other states and cities there will be only minor differences: price, modes of transport, etc. And so, let's start with the fact that you have arrived in the USA and you somehow need to get to the hotel. In New York you can do this in a variety of ways. By the way, these options work both ways;) i.e. both FROM the airport and TO the airport.

1. Taxi

Perhaps the easiest way to get from point A to point B. At each airport there is a special place where you can take a taxi. As a rule, there is a sign for this place in the airport building and on the street. But you can always ask if you suddenly haven’t found such a pointer.

Cost $60 (from/to JFK) $40 (from/to La Guardia). It is always fixed, no matter what part of Manhattan you need to get to. But if you need to go to Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, or to some other area of New York or to another city, then the cost will be “on the meter” (we’ll talk about the cost “on the meter” a little later). The price includes: travel, cost of the tunnel/bridge (depending on the route chosen by the driver), taxes and fees, tips.

What’s most interesting is that in a taxi you can pay with a credit card. In my opinion, this is very convenient;) Especially in the case of taxi drivers, who sometimes say that they do not have change, as a result you pay more than you could and expected.

As a type of taxi, I would also consider the services of Uber. The company is rapidly gaining momentum. Very common in New York. And, in the case of yellow taxis, you can catch one (especially in the center of Manhattan) for up to 15-20 minutes. Uber picks you up within 5 minutes. At the same time, you can immediately see the estimated travel time and cost in your mobile application.

Speaking of cost, Uber is much cheaper than a regular taxi. BUT, for example, my friends were once traveling from JFK airport before me (there was no way to meet them), they paid $3-4 more than I usually get home by taxi, including tips. And in Uber you don't pay tips.

Estimated travel time is 40-60 minutes (it all depends on the road conditions and the route chosen by the taxi driver)

1.1. SHUTTLE

I won’t say that this is public transport (well, probably, as is the case with a taxi), but it is also a very common way to get from/to the airport.

Cost $25.99 (from/to JFK) $19.59 (from/to La Guardia), and also adds the cost of the tunnel/bridge, taxes and fees, tips may not be paid))

You can purchase a shuttle ticket on the Shuttle Transfer website. When issuing a ticket, you must indicate the airport, flight number and time of arrival, destination address, number of adults and children, and amount of luggage. Then enter your credit card information and print your ticket.

Estimated travel time to Manhattan is 40-60 minutes (it all depends on the road conditions and the route chosen by the taxi driver)

2. Express bus

A less comfortable method, but a budget one)) Disembarkation and embarkation are carried out at special stops, signs for which, as in the case of taxis, are at every airport and on the street. Buses leave every 30 minutes. Opening hours: from 5 am to 11.30 am (perhaps the main inconvenience of these buses).

Cost $17 (from/to JFK) $14 (from/to La Guardia). But you can buy round trip tickets at once, then it will be cheaper: $30 (from/to JFK) $26 (from/to La Guardia). The price includes: travel, Wi-Fi on board the bus, free transfer from the final point in New York (more about them below) to the hotel, provided that it is located in Midtown Manhattan, namely between 23rd and 63rd. th streets, and already, everyone’s “favorite” taxes and fees, where would we be without them))

Boarding the bus is carried out using pre-purchased tickets. How to buy? There are several ways:

— register them on the Nyc Airporter website (BE SURE to print them at home);
— buy at the sales counter at the airport, located immediately (as a rule) at the exit from the baggage claim hall or next to the terminal Information Center;
— buy from a company agent (you will always recognize them by their uniform: green coats in winter / white shirts in summer), who operate in the terminal building or in front of the entrance/exit of it. An express bus will take you to (and also from these points to the airport):
— Central Station (Grand Central Terminal),
— Central Bus Station (Port Authority),
— Penn Station,
— Bryant Park ONLY from the airport.

Estimated travel time is 60-80 minutes (it all depends on road conditions).

3. Subway

The most economical, but also the most tedious method. As advice, I can say the following: after a long flight, do not skimp and use the previous methods. The subway ride is very difficult, especially if this is your first time in New York. Figure out where to go, in which direction to move, etc. Besides, there is nothing better than starting your New York vacation with a yellow taxi!

Cost $7.75 (from/to JFK). And so, the first thing you need to use is the AirTrain (ground mini-metro). There are three of them in JFK: one runs between terminals, 2 others go to Jamaica Station:

— find the AirTrain sign and follow the indicated direction;
— take the train going into the city to the Jamaica terminal station (the direction of the train is indicated on the board);
- At Jamaica Station, go to the concourse at the end of the platform, where there are MetroCard vending machines and turnstiles;
— purchase a MetroCard Pay-Per-Ride card from the machine with a nominal value of at least $7.75 (the cost of the card is chosen by the passenger himself, ranging from $5 to $80);
- with this MetroCard, go to the turnstile and insert the card into a special slot at its end (the card will first go inside and then come back), and its balance will decrease by $5 (the cost of travel on the AirTrain). Now you need to decide on your destination address and select the desired subway direction: E (from 59th Street to WTC), J or Z (via Brooklyn to Dinetown);
— follow the signs in the right direction;
- to get on the metro, you need to use the MetroCard again, which you have already purchased taking into account the trip on the metro ($2.75);
— when you enter the metro, the most important thing is to decide on the direction (the station is NOT the final one);
— follow to your station. Estimated travel time is 90-120 minutes.

The first two are located in the Queens area, and getting to them is easy by any means of transport: subway, bus, taxi, car or transfer. Newark Airport is located in the neighboring city and state of New Jersey, which is separated from New York only by a river. But besides the fact that the road will not be difficult, you still need to know exactly how to act at the airport or, conversely, where in the city to look for transport to the airport.

In this article, you will learn how to get from JFK and LaGuardia airports to New York, how much it costs, how long the trip will take, and what mode of transport is preferable. How to get from John F. Kennedy International Airport to New York

How to get from Kennedy Airport to New York

John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York is the largest airport in the entire United States, and one of the busiest in the world. It is located in New York City, in the borough of Queens, in the southeast of the city. The airport is only 20 kilometers away from Manhattan, which means that the journey to the center will not take much time.

There are 6 terminals at JFK Airport, numbered one, two, four, five, seven and eight. The remaining terminals were demolished, as they could no longer cope with passenger traffic, and were replaced with new ones.

An automatic AirTrain runs between the terminals. Not only does this train operate around the clock, but it will also take you not only to the desired terminal, but also to metro stations. In short, you very likely will need an AirTrain. A ticket for this train costs $5.

Metro

Cost: 3 + 5 dollars
Travel time: 40-60 minutes
Opening hours: 24 hours a day

The automated AirTrain, which runs between the terminals, then goes to two subway stations - Howard Station (Line A) and Sutphin Blvd/Archer Ave (Lines J and E), as well as the commuter train station Jamaica Station.

A ride on the New York subway costs $3. To do this, you need to buy a MetroCard, which gives you the right to travel on all types of public transport in New York for 2 hours for the same 3 dollars. However, the card does not apply to AirTrain. The ticket can be purchased at the metro station from a machine or at the ticket office.

The total travel time by metro and automatic train will take you from 40 minutes to an hour, and maybe a little more. It takes 40 minutes to drive to Brooklyn, about 50 minutes to Lower Manhattan, and 60-65 minutes to Upper Manhattan.

The metro operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, making it much easier for travelers arriving or departing at night who don't want to spend a lot of money on travel to and from JFK Airport.

Bus

Cost: from 12 dollars
Travel time: 50-60 minutes
Opening hours: 24 hours a day

There are bus stops near each airport terminal, so you don't have to take the AirTrain. There are several carriers that typically terminate at JFK and Manhattan.

The ticket is purchased from the driver. Different companies have different ticket prices, but usually they range from $12-20. You can also buy a ticket on the official websites of the companies. Some of the names are: Trans-Bridge Lines, SuperShuttle, Goairlinkshuttl, New York Airport Express, Airlink NYC.

As always, you can find out the full bus schedule, stops for each route and the cost of the trip in the arrivals halls of each terminal at the tourist information kiosk.

Some areas of New York can be reached by city buses. For example, for just $3, bus No. B15 will take you to Brooklyn, where you can transfer to the subway or another bus.

Taxi

Cost: from 30 dollars
Travel time: from 20 minutes
Opening hours: 24 hours a day

New York is a taxi city. Almost all city residents prefer this type of transport to a personal car. So it is not surprising that there are many taxi cars near the airport that are ready to take you anywhere in New York. Moreover, you can do without taxi counters in the arrivals hall or special employees coordinating the car. Everything is simpler - get out and get into a free taxi.

A trip to Manhattan will cost you about $40. To Queens or Brooklyn, of course, a taxi will cost less. But, for example, to Staten Island it is more expensive. It all depends on the distance from the airport, which is located right in the Queens borough.

Car rent

I would immediately like to warn travelers who are going to the USA for the first time: if you plan to spend your entire vacation in New York, then there is no point in having a car; moreover, it will only slow you down. Eternal traffic jams, an unfamiliar city, and even a lack of parking spaces - do you need it?

But if you would like to travel to other cities and attractions, visit other states, and maybe even get to the West Coast, then in this case you can’t do without a car! You can rent a car either in New York itself or immediately upon arrival at the airport. And give it to any rental office in the country.

Car rental companies' offices at JFK Airport are located in the arrivals halls of each terminal (usually just behind the baggage carousels). Here you'll find well-known companies like Hertz or Avis and local rental services. We advise you to order a car online in advance, as the configuration or equipment you need may not be available. In addition, when booking a car in advance, there is a possibility of significant savings, since prices when booking online are usually cheaper. To understand how this works, we advise you to read our article “”, where you will find detailed instructions for booking a car using the site as an example.

It is worth warning you that the offices of rental companies at the airport are not open 24 hours a day, but only during the daytime.

Transfer from JFK Airport to New York

This is definitely a vehicle for lazy people! Even putting aside jokes, we understand that ordering a transfer cannot be simpler than any of the above methods. The driver will meet you in the airport arrivals hall, help you load your luggage into the car, and take you to the address specified in advance. All that is needed from you is to order a transfer in advance via the Internet (read about this in the article “”). In addition, a transfer is often cheaper than a taxi, although it performs more functions. Fill out the form below to compare transfer prices or to order and prepay for a car.

This question most often interests participants in the Work and Travel program, who go to conquer the United States every summer, as well as other tourists. Let's try to answer it in as much detail as possible.

The question, one might say, has an asterisk. I know about this because I myself was looking for information of this kind several years ago. The fact is that not such a large percentage of students stay to work directly in New York. Most of the program participants are scattered across the vast expanses of the American continent. And the cheapest way to get to neighboring or not so cities is by bus. However, you still need to somehow get to the bus station. I will try to tell you about this in as much detail as possible. I hope the information will be useful not only to WorkandTravel residents, but also to all other guests of the Big Apple.

So, there are several ways to get out of Kennedy Airport (JFK) in New York:

  • Bus – takes about 45 minutes and takes you straight to the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
  • A taxi is not a very cheap option and should be used if you are traveling with a large group (to split the fare).
  • Car rental - in each terminal there is an information kiosk (usually in the baggage claim area), which will help you rent a car or give you phone numbers where you can get all the necessary instructions. This option is more suitable for independent tourists.
  • The metro is the most budget-friendly way, which we will discuss in this article.

PS: If your city is quite far from New York, it is more advisable to consider domestic flights. In some cases, this method of travel turns out to be relatively inexpensive and much faster than buses.

JFK Airport

So, you've been on the road for 10 or even 12 hours and want to quickly get off the plane and stretch your legs. However, you won’t be able to relax - there is a long and tedious queue ahead for passport control, searching for luggage, then customs control and the road to your destination. With all this, you shouldn’t even count on your good English. New York itself is a bustling city, and the airport is even worse. Therefore, you should not rely on the tips of random passers-by, but only on yourself. And to the pointers, of course.

Kennedy Airport (JFK) in New York

The airport has 8 terminals, but, as a rule, planes from Belarus, Russia and Europe arrive at the first 4 (depending on the airline). In fact, it doesn’t really matter which terminal you end up in, because you’ll have to take the same route to get out of them.

Note: JFK Airport was named after the 35th American President ( J ohn F itzgerald K ennedy), who today is more often remembered not because of his political activities, but because of the mysterious murder that shocked the whole world.

Electric train AirTrain

The first thing you should do is look at AirTrain, a monorail unmanned train station. Yes, yes, there is no driver: the train is controlled by a computer. The train will deliver to any airport terminal, as well as to two metro stations: Jamaica Station and Howard Beach.

You will need Airtrain if you are connecting to another flight. For example, if you are flying somewhere else from New York, and the plane departs from terminal 2, while you arrived, say, at terminal 4. You won’t be able to get from one terminal to another on foot - the airport area is very huge.

For those who get to their destination by bus, the main goal is to take Airtrain to the subway. The station you need is Jamaica Station. Please note that there are three types of trains:

  • one connects exclusively JFK airport terminals (Yellow Line);
  • the second goes through all terminals and takes you to the Howard Beach metro station (green line);
  • the third connects the terminals and goes to the Jamaica Station metro station (red line).

You probably already realized that you need the last train. If you can't find your way around an Airtrain station, try looking for the employee consultants (usually they are dressed in red uniforms and are on duty at each platform). If you got on the train and realized that you had gone to the wrong place, don’t panic: you can ride on electric trains as much as your heart desires. Payment for travel is made only at the exit. Moreover, only at those exits that lead to the city. And these are the same 2 metro stations.

Let's assume that you finally made it to Jamaica Station. What's next? And then you have the most interesting fun - paying for travel. That is, in order to “go free”, you need to pay for all your rides on Airtrain. In principle, there is nothing complicated about this: you just need to swipe your card through a special hole in the turnstile and the gate will open. But the problem is different - where can I get this roller?

How to buy a metro card?

As I already said, in order to leave the Airtrain station, you need to purchase a card. You can buy it in the terminals, which are located to the right of the turnstiles. It’s worth immediately taking note that this terminal (similar to an ATM) also sells combined Airtrain + metro tickets. Since you will soon be going down to the subway, it is worth taking this particular card. Offers a terminal and cards for multiple trips.

In principle, such terminals are no longer uncommon in many developed cities in Europe, so it is quite possible that you have already encountered this technology at some point. By touching the touch screen, you need to select the type of card (in our case, Metrocard), then let the machine “eat” your honestly saved green cards and receive in return the coveted ticket, which will fall into a special tray (like in vending machines with food or drinks).

The terminals “communicate” in fairly simple English. Before you start working with the device, check if it can be translated into Russian. Some map machines have a list of supported languages. Maybe you'll get lucky.

New York Subway (Subway)

Having figured out the terminal, swiped the card at the turnstile, climbed the long escalator and finally exited the Airtrain station, you find yourself on the street. It seems that you are already in New York, but there is nothing to see here yet. There are only long, nondescript walls of buildings around, giving the impression that you are still in some kind of passage.

Here you need to carefully look at the signs for “Subway” (metro) or “Sutphin Blvd / Archer Av JFK Airport” - the metro station we need. Please note that it is located on branch “E” (blue in the diagram above). The train from this station takes you directly to the Port Authority bus station.

The same card that allowed you to leave the already rather boring Airtrain platform will help you get on the subway. Gates at the turnstiles work in both directions. In order for them to open at the entrance, you need to pay the fare; to exit the metro, you just need to push them manually.

Be careful, it’s not enough just to find platform “E”, you also need to orient yourself in the direction of the train. You need to go towards Manhattan - everyone knows it, so even if you don’t figure it out yourself, you can ask people. In the other direction the train goes to only one station, which is the final station.

What else is important to know about the subway in New York? Trains going to completely different places can pass along the same rails here. Simply put, trains from different lines can stop on the same platform. And some don’t even stop at all, but pass by.

How not to go crazy? Answer: look at the first carriage. On the front of the driver's cabin, the letter of the line along which the train is moving is indicated. Also, such letters may be on other cars. Look carefully which train you take.

Well, did you get into the carriage? Now you can look for a place to sit, because your drive is... about an hour. Yes, yes, this is New York, the distances here make themselves felt. As you are heading towards the bus terminal, the station you need to get off at will be called "42 St Port Authority Bus Terminal".

PS: I wrote about how to navigate the Port Authority here (look at the very end of the material). I hope this information is useful to you. Good luck conquering New York!
