Hungary, Lake Balaton: prices, reviews. Holidays on Lake Balaton - a trip to the land of ancient Hungarian taverns and gypsy melodies Lake in Hungary Balaton beaches

Relaxation and best resorts of Lake Balaton in Hungary.

Balaton- a freshwater lake in the west, the largest in Central Europe. The Balaton coast is the most important resort area in Hungary with mineral and thermal springs. The lake is located on the Middle Danube Plain, 100 km from Budapest. Lake area 600 sq. km., and the length of the coast is 195 km. A unique feature of Lake Balaton is its shallow depth. The average depth of the lake is about 3 meters, the only relatively deep place of the lake is the Tihany Depression near the Tihany Peninsula - 12.4 meters. The depth profile is different for the northern and southern shores. If in the northern part of the lake at a distance of 20-30 meters from the shore the depth already reaches two meters, then near the southern shore and at a distance of 200-300 meters from the shore the depth is about a meter. The bottom of the lake, especially noticeable in the shallow waters of the southern shore, is covered with fine velvety sand.

Clean warm water and picturesque coastal scenery make this resort popular not only among residents of the country, but also among tourists from all over Europe. This is what I call Lake Balaton in different languages (Hungarian Balaton, German Plattensee, Slovak Blatenske jazero, Slovenian Blatno jezero, Latin Pelso), the Hungarians call it the “Hungarian Sea” or Balcsi.

Lake Balaton is divided into two shores:

North coast - Keszthely, Szigliget, Badacsonytomaj, Revfulep, Tihany, Balatonfüred and Balatonkenese.

South coast - Tapolca, Fonyod, Siófok, Santod, Balatonföldvár, Balatonbolgar and Balatonlelle.

History of Lake Balaton

Millions of years ago there was a sea in place of the lake. Due to geological shifts, the seabed has risen and the landscape has been greatly altered by volcanic activity. Once upon a time, Romans, Germanic and Slavic tribes lived in the vicinity of Lake Balaton. In 1019, King Endre built an abbey in Tihany.
Balaton became a popular resort at the end of the 19th century.

Holidays on Lake Balaton

The northern shore of Balaton is more suitable for lovers of active recreation. At a short distance from the shore it is quite deep, and you can enjoy yachting and fishing (there are more than 20 species of fish in the lake). The towns of Siófok and Balatonfüred, located on the shores of the lake, have electric-powered water skiing tracks with trapezes. Experienced instructors will help you in a few hours to feel confident in water skiing and experience true pleasure from skiing. Also, in the last few years, equestrian tourism has been actively developing, and horse shows are held, which are watched with delight by both adults and children. And for those who prefer cycling to horseback riding, it is necessary to take a cycling voyage that completely encircles Lake Balaton, called the “Bicycle Ring Around the Lake”.

Balaton Climate

The climate of Lake Balaton is temperate continental. The shores of the lake are characterized by long sunny summers. Soft, slightly alkaline water with a high content of iodine and a special southern microclimate create here an almost complete illusion of a holiday at sea. from mid-May to the end of September. Winters are relatively mild, but the lake freezes almost every winter. The average ice thickness is 10-20 centimeters, however, there have been cases of formation of 70 centimeter ice. The lake experiences strong winds that are dangerous for sailors and small craft. A special service monitors the wind strength on the lake. Due to the shallow depth, the water in the lake warms up well; in summer, the average water temperature in the lake is +21-22 °C, sometimes warming up to +29 °C. The water in Balaton is clean, but not transparent due to the plankton content in it. The predominant color of the water is light green, but can change depending on the weather and time of day.

At the top of the neighboring mountain stands another local landmark - the Szigliget fortress, built in the 13th century. According to the authoritative opinion of local residents, this water gives a special aroma to the bouquet of local wines. Old peasant houses are adjacent to modern dachas and villas, which gives a unique flavor to the landscape of the village. One of the secrets to the popularity of these resorts is that it is only one hour's drive from here to Budapest by motorway. Surrounded by picturesque nature and the summer villas of wealthy Budapest residents, small guesthouses have also lined up.

South Shore - Lake Balaton

Tapolca- a medical resort on the western northern coast of Lake Balaton. Its main feature is the use of cave therapy for the treatment of various diseases, and the healing cave is located directly in the center of the city. The town of Tapolca is surrounded by fourteen basalt mountain cones, completely covered with vineyards. The city was built in a place where in ancient times the waves of the Panno Sea splashed. The city is famous for its karst caves and the geologically rare underground lake in the Tavash cave.

Fonyod-the oldest settlement on the southern coast. A lonely mountain towering above the flat terrain already attracts attention to the town from afar. Surrounded by convenient beaches, Fonyod is a lively tourist center with a beautiful marina and bustling life in the central part of the city.

After volcanic eruptions, more than 100 hills with geysers were formed on the peninsula. One of the most beautiful is called the “Golden House” because its rocks are covered with an unusual golden-colored lichen. Thanks to its beautiful nature, in 1952 the peninsula received the status of a nature reserve.

Hotel-palace FRIED CASTLE 3*

This castle is not one of the ancient ones - it was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The wealthy Hungarian industrialist Imre Fried conceived the idea of building it on the eve of the anniversary of his married life, and upon completion of construction he presented the palace to his wife. The location for the castle was chosen very well: vineyards, forests, Lake Mislai, the Shio River - everything is conducive to leisurely walks and pleases the eye with beautiful landscapes. Natural wood was used in the interior decoration of rooms and premises: figured parquet made of valuable wood, wooden ceilings in the Louis style, a unique staircase decorated with figurines of dragons. The highlight and main decoration of the interior was the hand-carved furniture, made with great skill and imagination.

The hotel offers an outdoor heated swimming pool, sauna, and jacuzzi. For lovers of active recreation - table tennis, bowling alley, horseback riding in the surrounding area. Fishing lovers will be able to try their luck on Lake Mislai; they say there is always a good bite here.

And so that you are completely imbued with the unusual atmosphere, in the evening a carriage will be delivered to the hotel’s porch, which will take you to the hotel’s wine cellar. Home-made wines from local grapes are stored here. With a glass of dry wine, guests will taste real rich Hungarian goulash, prepared according to a special recipe.

Festecic Castle

In the center of the park in the Hungarian town of Keszthely, which occupies the northwestern shore of Lake Balaton, is the country’s largest castle, Festetics. The castle was created in the mid-18th century in the image of French palaces, which was reflected in the lush interior decoration and complex decoration of the facade.

Samples of Hungarian weapons from different eras are exhibited in the halls of the first floor. The library, located in the most elegant room of the palace, houses the only private aristocratic collection of books in Hungary that has survived in its original form, including the first printed books, rare engravings, and sheet music autographed by Haydn.

Since 1974, the castle has housed an independent museum, and a collection of carriages, carts and other equipment is displayed in the stables.

Today, the castle grounds host events of a wide variety of nature: international conferences, concerts, literary readings, balls and receptions.

Tihany Abbey

Once upon a time, one of the oldest earthen fortresses in Hungary stood on this site. But in 1055, the Hungarian king Andras created an abbey here in the name of the Blessed Virgin and Saint Anjas. Exactly five years after this, András died from wounds received in the war for the throne and was buried in the monastery crypt.

The document on the establishment of the abbey is one of the oldest monuments of Hungarian writing - it is in it that for the first time among the Latin text about 100 words in the Hungarian language are found.

The defenders of the Benedictine monastery successfully repelled multiple Turkish assaults for a century and a half. But the fortress did not perish during battles, but at the beginning of the 18th century, when the Habsburg emperor ordered the demolition of all Hungarian fortifications. A new church was built by 1735, but a year later it burned down.

As a result, only the crypt, made in the Romanesque style, remained from the ancient monastery building. The building we see today was built in 1754. Many famous artists worked on its interior decoration. Particularly noteworthy are the luxuriously decorated carved altars, which are rightfully considered a masterpiece of Hungarian wooden sculpture of the 18th century. The master who created them, Sebastian Stulhof, worked on them for 25 years, and, surprisingly, completely free of charge.

Updated 02/07/2019

The beaches of Siófok will be a pleasant discovery for those who come to Hungary and Lake Balaton for the first time. They differ from the usual understanding of the word “beach,” which usually implies a lot of sand, a lack of greenery and a pile of sun loungers. Also in this post I will tell you how to get from Budapest to Siófok.

Season in Siofok

Siófok is considered the largest city on the southern shore of Lake Balaton. The name of the city was given by an artificial canal that connects Balaton with the Danube. It was first dug by the ancient Romans in the 3rd century BC. Currently, the canal is used to regulate the water level in Lake Balaton.

The season in Siofok, which is the hometown of the famous composer Imre Kalman, begins in July and lasts until the end of August. The first time I visited here was in early July and, apparently, I came at a good moment. All establishments were open until late every day. In June this happened only on Friday and Saturday. Therefore, when planning a trip here, take this fact into account. In addition, in June the weather can bring surprises

This is what Lake Balaton might look like in mid-June. There is no question of any beach or sunbathing. Waves, strong winds and a complete absence of people.

Fortunately, such stormy days practically never happen in July and August, and you can bask in the sun on the shore of the lake for several hours at a time. There are more than enough beaches in Siófok for this purpose.

Beaches of Siofok

The length of the coastline that belongs to Siófok is about 15 kilometers. A distinctive feature of all the beaches in Siófok, and indeed throughout Balaton, is the absence of sand and pebbles. Instead people sunbathe on the grass lawn, which I think is a great solution. In addition, there are many trees growing here that create natural shade.

Not as hard as in the case of pebbles, but also without the ubiquitous sand that gets into everything you put on it.

The lawn-beach and the lake are separated by an embankment, which is great for walking at sunset, running in the morning or riding a bike at any time of the day.

The lake itself is framed by an artificially created strip consisting of randomly piled stones.

Nevertheless, it is convenient to go down into the water, since every 50-100 meters there are special entrances with railings and wooden steps. The bottom of the lake is sandy, which is another significant plus for Balaton.

Otherwise, the beaches of Siófok resemble standard beaches that open in the summer season near bodies of water. There are toilets and changing cabins, there are points selling hot dogs and soft drinks, and there are sellers of boiled corn and cotton candy. Most of the photos presented in the article were taken on the beach, which is located next to the Prémium Hotel Panorama. Admission to it is free, there are no opening hours as such - you can come early in the morning and watch the sunrise, or walk in the dark at night. This beach is marked on the map with a green marker.

There is also a paid beach in Siófok that you will have to fork out for access to. It is called Central. It is located near the Balaton Hotel.

About Balaton and why it is called the big puddle

Lake Balaton is the largest freshwater body of water on the entire European continent. The water in it is clean, but due to the large amount of plankton invisible to the eye, the lake has an unusual light green color. The bottom is sandy, the shallow depth lasts several tens of meters, so Lake Balaton is ideal for families with children.

The water in June is not super warm, but not cold either. You can swim, evidence of this is that there are a lot of people in the water, including children. All due, again, to the shallow depth of the lake. By the way, because of this, Lake Balaton is sometimes ironically called “the largest puddle in Central Europe.” But there are also more noble names for the lake - for example, the Hungarian Sea. The ancient Romans called the lake Pelso, and the Hungarians often call the reservoir with the slang word Balcsi.

Like any large body of water, Lake Balaton has its own legends and traditions. The most famous of them says that at the bottom of the lake there is a church in which a maiden sits and constantly cries. And as long as the girl sheds tears, there will always be water in Lake Balaton.

The main symbol of Lake Balaton is swans. These snow-white birds are found here in large numbers and are practically not afraid of people. They happily accept food from their hands and click their beaks if it runs out. You can watch the graceful birds for a very long time - they are so beautiful. Especially against the backdrop of sunset.

How long does it take to get to Siófok?

I have already been asked several times whether it is worth traveling from Budapest to Siófok for one day. My personal opinion is that this town does not deserve such attention.

In a separate article I talk about all the attractions of Siófok and after studying it, you will understand that there are just one or two of them here. A walk through the center will hardly take more than an hour.

It’s another matter if you come to Lake Balaton for a week or two and combine a beach holiday with exploring the most interesting lakeside towns – Keszthely, Tihany and others. To do this, I recommend renting an apartment or house on Airbnb. By registering using this link, you will receive from 14 to 20 euros (the amount changes slightly from time to time) discounts on your first booking.

For those who prefer to stay in hotels, see a brief overview of them in the same article where I talk about the attractions.

You can travel around the surroundings of Lake Balaton by public transport (bus and train connections are well developed here), a rented car or even a bicycle. There are many bike paths around the entire lake, so your rides will be comfortable.

I recommend swimming and sunbathing on the beaches of Siofok, since they are quite extensive (the first plus), most of them are free (the second plus), and the town itself can offer an entertainment program in the evening during the season (the third plus).

Budapest – Lake Balaton: how to get there

One of the most frequently asked questions about Lake Balaton is how to get from Budapest to Siófok. I answer. There are several ways, namely

  1. Train.
  2. Bus.
  3. Car (your own or rented).
  4. Taxi/transfer

To Siófok by train

The train from Budapest to Siófok leaves several times a day (usually from Delhi South Railway Station). You can buy train tickets in advance on the Internet (in which I tell you step by step how to do this), or from the machines installed at the railway stations of Budapest (this process I).

By the way, if you buy tickets to Siófok, then copy and paste the word Siófok into the “To” (destination) line - this is much more convenient than searching among all the dropped-down settlements.

One ticket per adult in a second class carriage will cost approximately 2,300 – 2,500 forints (8-9 euros). Travel time will be one and a half to two hours. The advantage of traveling by train is that you can take your bike with you.

To Siófok from Budapest by bus

You can also get to Siófok by buses that leave from the Nepliget bus station. You can purchase tickets online at volanbusz.hu (there is a version in English), but they can also be purchased at the box office without any problems. The ticket price and travel time are approximately the same as in the case of a train. There are flights in the morning, afternoon and evening. Many buses are equipped with wi-fi points, but not all.

To Siófok by car

Cost of a holiday on Lake Balaton

The beauty of a holiday in this part of Hungary is that prices for holidays on Lake Balaton can be called moderate.

Accommodation in Hungarian hotels is cheap and always comes with two meals a day. Flights cost around 250 euros during high season, but you can save money by taking a bus tour or driving your own car to Hungary. For example, a two-week bus tour from Minsk (Belarus) costs between 190-510 euros. At the same time, you live in Budapest for a day and have the opportunity to book a boat trip (15 euros).

Very reasonable prices for week-long tours can be found on the website rsptravel.ru. Here are some examples from the towns of Lake Balaton:

  • Balatonmaldi – 438-584 euros (four-star hotel);
  • Balatonfured - 438-813 in 4-star and 297-609 euros in 3-star hotels;
  • Tihany Peninsula – 343-567 euros (4 stars);
  • Siofok – 498-812 (4 stars), 334-577 (3 stars);
  • Siófok (family rooms) – 317-944.

Add here the costs of a Hungarian visa (80 euros), medical insurance (1 euro/day) and an air ticket (250 euros), season it with an excursion program (about 50-60 euros need to be budgeted). The total costs for an average week-long tour are approximately one thousand euros. If you wish, you can choose a medical tour to Heviz (with accommodation in a hotel or sanatorium) for a ridiculous price of 94-420 euros.

The main resort on Lake Balaton is Siófok.

You can also easily find a suitable option on the search service poisk-tour.com. Weekly tours for two adults cost 900-1200 euros (on average), which, you see, is very affordable.

Summarize. Balaton perfectly combines youth, medical and beach holidays, and family travelers with small children gather on the southern coast of the lake. Prices in Hungary are ridiculous – both for food and accommodation. At the same time, the temperate continental climate does not require acclimatization efforts. For people suffering from cardiovascular diseases, Balaton and Heviz will be real gifts. Have a nice trip!
