During the Middle Ages, the city was named Velbdyzh, and was annexed to the territory of Bulgaria by Tsar Kaloyan (1197-1207).

From 1379 to 1395 the city was ruled by Konstantin Dragash, in whose honor the city was renamed - Kyustendil, land of Constantine. Since the 15th century, the Turks conquered the city and subjected the population to mass assimilation. During the reign, many revolutionary couples tried to liberate the city. History of creation and development

Kyustendil is considered one of the most ancient cities in Bulgaria. The Thracian tribes appreciated the fertility of the land and the proximity to hot mineral springs, as a result of which the first Thracian settlement grew on the site of the modern city.

Just like in the 1st century AD. the city was within the Roman Empire. During this period, the small village grew significantly in size, turning into a real fortress, behind whose walls trade flourished, and even then there was a mineral resort.

After the conquest by the Turks, Kyustendil experienced complete decline. Its revival began only after 1878, when the city was liberated.
