Ski resort Val Gardena. Resort Val Gardena, Italy. Dolomites Resort towns Val Gardena

Coming to Val Gardena, you feel as if you are entering a fairy tale. These are not just beautiful words, but the feelings of those who found themselves in this valley for the first time. Descending from the Brenner Pass, the peak of Sassolungo will appear in front of you - this is a sure sign that you are almost there.

In this valley, many people speak German, and the inscriptions on the signs are presented in two versions: German and Italian. This is due to the fact that back in the 19th century these places belonged to Austria-Hungary. The locals are Ladins, they speak Ladin among themselves, but can communicate in Italian and German, so there are never any problems with communication.

Russian ski resorts offer you a more budget-friendly, but no less active and comfortable holiday. Abzakovo is one of the most popular resorts in the Ural Mountains. The beauty of nature and the variety of trails attract many tourists there every year. It is noteworthy that Abzakovo operates year-round... You will find out more information.

On the map of Italy, Val Gardena looks very tiny, but once you’ve been here, you begin to understand what a large part of the country it is, thanks to its traditions, the beauty of nature and the attitude of local residents towards tourists.

Val Gardena! As beautiful as this phrase sounds, this Alpine valley is so beautiful from all points of view. A separate book could be devoted to describing it, but we, limited by the narrow framework of a ski essay, will try to briefly highlight the main aspects in order to give impetus to further more detailed acquaintance with the details already on the spot.

"Val" in Italian means "valley", "Gardenia" in the local Ladin language means "fence" or "enclosure". A narrow and steep serpentine valley (elevation gain of about 1000 meters) goes to the right of the highway connecting the Italian Bolzano with the Austrian Innsbruck. Administratively, the resort is located in the Alto Adige region, in the province of South Tyrol, which until 1918 was part of the Habsburg Empire, which left and continues to leave its mark on the local way of life. In particular, this is manifested in the lifestyle of the local population and traditions, which are much closer to Austrian than to Italian. For skiers, this is important in the sense that the quality of service here is similar to Austrian, and many people recognize Austria as the best in terms of the level of ski product. However, this does not apply to après ski, which is much quieter and calmer here than in some daring Austrian villages. In the evening after skiing, it is customary to visit one of the restaurants, but if you wish, in some bars you will find local flavor in the form of cheerful Tyrolean songs and dances, for example, in the La Stua establishment in Selva at the finish line of the route with Ciampinoi.

From a skiing point of view, Val Gardena is part of the Dolomites Superski alliance, which unites twelve resorts with a common ski pass and ranks first in the world in terms of total kilometers of slopes. When we talk about the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we always have to use excellent adjectives: the largest region, the largest mountains, the most beautiful views. And this is really not an exaggeration: the Dolomites are considered by many to be the most beautiful mountains in the Alps; majestic views of stone giants, especially in the rays of the setting sun, are classic alpine landscapes and are included in all photo albums dedicated to popular European mountains.

Not all regions of the Dolomiti Superski are connected by highways; traveling by car from one to another takes from half an hour to two to three hours. But this does not apply to the Sellaronda region, which in turn includes Val Gardena. It has 400 kilometers of connected trails that you can navigate without taking off your skis, visiting, in addition to Gardena, the trails of the resorts of Alta Badia, Arabba and Val di Fassa.

Let's focus on considering the ski opportunities of Val Gardena itself. For skiing in the valley, there are 175 kilometers of ski slopes with a good combination of beautiful forest and open slopes. The region unites three towns: Ortisei (1236 m), S. Cristina (1428 m) and Selva (1563 m). Each of them has lifts into the ski area, which can generally be considered continuous, with the exception of Ortisei, where the ski slopes are on both sides of the city. To get there from one side of the valley to the other, you need to use an underground tunnel with a travelator, and then walk another three hundred meters. You can also use the bus service between the main ski lifts of the cities, but it can hardly be called convenient due to the low frequency of flights, and you will also have to pay for the trip. In general, we travel only on skis, lifts and sometimes on our own two feet. By the way, in Selva there are hotels located directly on the slope or next to it, which allows you to ski on a ski-in/ski-out basis.

So let's start with the beginners. One of the best “training” sites in the Alps is offered for them - the Alpe di Siusi plateau (1700-2210 m) above Ortisei. Large, spacious, sunny. Trails with smooth terrain that do not require much effort to maintain balance. You can call this a family place, where mom, dad and children get on skis for the first time. And this happens in the majestic scenery of the surrounding mountains. A great start to your ski career. The kilometers of slopes here are sufficient for small ski safaris, which will delight not yet very experienced skiers.

As you gain experience and gain confidence in the technique, when the red runs are no longer scary, you can move to the other side of the valley and climb to the top of Seceda (2518 m). There are excellent wide trails of medium difficulty towards San Cristina; it’s quite possible to stay here for half a day to “drive”. Diluting this pleasure, we recommend a wonderful eleven-kilometer (the longest in the region) descent back to Ortisei. It is not very wide, since its main part is in the forest, winding along the slope in small zigzags. But it is very beautiful and there are two local attractions on it: a beautiful, several meters high, frozen waterfall and, closer to the bottom of the route on the right side, Anna’s Cafe, where you can have a delicious lunch or end your ski day with dinner. Popular and colorful place. A little advice: take a ride along this route at least once, not at the end of the day, but at least before lunch, while it is not too broken - you will get great pleasure.

Well, with skiing skills growing, it's time to move further up the valley and visit the slopes of San Cristina and Selva. To do this, we will use the local “metro” - an underground rail funicular connecting the northern and southern slopes above San Cristina. We will climb to the top of Ciampinoi (2254 m), which offers breathtaking views of the local landmark - Sassolungo Peak (Sassolungo, 3181 m, “sasso lungo” translated from Italian means “long stone”), from here there are several options for descent. First of all, self-confident skiers should stay on the slopes of the Alpine Ski World Cup, which takes place here annually around the Christmas holidays. It is called Saslong A and leads back to San Cristina, with a height difference of more than 800 meters. If you are not entirely confident in your abilities, you can go down the parallel red option (Saslong B), which is also very good. Closer to the finish of the red route, right next to the descent, stands the Fischburg castle, built in 1641 and served as the summer hunting residence of the Wolkenstein princes, who ruled in these places at that time (by the way, the Austrian name for Selva is Wolkenstein). Here, above San Cristina, there are several excellent routes from the top of Mont de Seura (2117) to the Monte Pana plateau (1636), located away from the main routes - they are usually sparsely populated and not very broken.

In the area of Plan de Gralba

The red and blue pistes in the area of Plan de Gralba (1800 m) are very pleasant. Not very long, with a drop of about 400 meters, but quite wide and comfortable even for beginners. But it will be quite difficult for them to get here from Selva, since to do this they need to go down from the top of Ciampinoi, the exits from which at the top are quite steep. For beginners, skiing in Selva and Cristina will generally be difficult, unless you are starting to ski for the first time and do not plan to spend your entire vacation on a training slope - for this case, there is an excellent site in Selva right within the city, served by several rope tows. The return red and black runs from Ciampinoi to Selva are good for confident skiers, but, unfortunately, they quickly break down due to the heavy load.

And finally, the last ski area is the slopes going to Selva from the top of Dantercepies (2300 m). With a very pleasant average slope, long, rolling, but they have the same problem as with the pistes on Ciampinoi - they quickly break up, as they lie directly on the Sellaronda route. The best time to ski here is in the first half of the day, before lunch.

We covered all the ski areas of Val Gardena, but this of course does not mean that you will only ski here. Other regions of Sellaronda, connected to it by ski lifts, are no less attractive, and you will probably make more than one voyage to the slopes of Val di Fassa, Alta Badia, Araba with its famous Marmolada glacier. Amazing opportunities for building ski safari routes. Most likely, you will return to these parts more than once, because from the first visit the carousel of Sellaronda is just beginning to unwind.

In the meantime, the first trip ends, what to bring home from here? The South Tyrol region is famous for its products. For example, every tenth apple in Europe is grown here, and in accordance with the highest environmental standards, which is facilitated by the local climate - a large number of sunny days, clean mountain air. In every town you will find shops with local specialties, many of which will surely appeal to your taste: in addition to apples (dried and in the form of juice), there is speck, wine, the famous grappa (the tradition of preparing which originated here in the thirteenth century) with a variety of flavorings, honey, canned vegetables and fruits, and so on and so forth. The abundance can easily make your head spin. And if you also taste several varieties of grappa, kindly offered for sampling by the hospitable owners of food stalls, then life in general can be considered a decided success. In general, prepare some free space in your suitcases. Don’t forget to also buy some kind of wooden interior item, at least a small figurine of an animal or a saint. The traditions of wood carving in Gardena are very strong; in each city there are several workshops where the process of “animating” wooden blanks takes place right before your eyes.

Today, the resort continues to combine aspiration with progress, maintaining and developing excellent skiing and, in general, sports infrastructure, with loyalty to traditions: the Ladin language (belonging to the Romansh group), local crafts and farming, regularly held folklore holidays and festivals are direct confirmation of this. “Striving for the future while paying tribute to the past” - perhaps this could be the motto of these regions.

Val Gardena is a very sunny place, which is confirmed by both statistics and our skiing experience. There is always good snow cover here, which is maintained in occasional winters with little snow by an excellent artificial snowmaking system. Local slopes are suitable for skiers of any level, the main thing is to choose the right city for accommodation (for beginners - Ortisei, for experienced ones - Cristina and Selva). It’s just that snowboarders don’t really like the local slopes, saying that it’s not convenient for them everywhere and there are a lot of gentle slopes on Sellaronda. There seems to be a certain amount of snobbery in this, although there really aren’t very many snowboarders on the slopes. Well, we’ll let everyone decide where it’s best to ski, but on our own we’ll just say that Val Gardena is our favorite place in the Alps.

The Val Gardena valley lies in the heart of the Dolomites in Italy (province of South Tyrol) and is very popular among skiers. The main advantages of this ski region are stunning mountain views, cozy villages and endless opportunities for skiing and ski safaris: almost 200 km of slopes plus convenient access to the Sella Ronda circular route and neighboring areas. In total, vacationers have access to almost one and a half thousand kilometers of slopes, connected by lifts and ski buses.

Business card

Until the end of the First World War, Val Gardena was part of Austria-Hungary, as a result of which the German language is even more common here than Italian. The local population also speaks Ladin, so all geographical names and settlements in the valley have 2-3 names. For example, the village of Ortisei in Italian sounds like Ortisei, in German it is called St. Ulrich, and in Ladin - Urtijёi.

Trails, slopes, lifts

In the Val Gardena valley in Italy there are three winter resorts: the village of Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva Gardena.

From Ortisei you can easily reach the Alpe Di Siusi area, excellent for relaxing skiing and learning, and Seceda & Col Raises, which will interest more experienced skiers (in particular, the region's longest run, the 10 km La Longia, is located here).

From the village of Santa Cristina, located in the center of the valley, you can easily reach the already mentioned area of Seceda & Col Raises, as well as Monte Pana (the area for beginners) and Ciampinoi, where the most difficult and famous slopes of Val Gardena are concentrated, including the “black » Saslong track, where the World Cup stage in giant slalom and downhill is held.

The lift to Ciampioni also starts from Selva. In addition, from Selva there is direct access to the Plan de Gralba ski area, where blue and green slopes predominate, and Dantercepies with training slopes where local ski schools conduct classes.

In addition, the famous Italian “around the world” route, the Sella Ronda route, runs through the Val Gardena valley: you can go around it or go through it to the slopes of the neighboring valleys - Val di Fassa, Alta Badia and Arabba Marmolada.

Entertainment and active recreation

Val Gardena has illuminated trails for night skiing, fun parks, cross-country ski trails, ski kindergartens and ski schools. In addition, local villages are perfectly prepared for relaxation after skiing.

Thus, in Ortisei, the Mar Dolomiti aquatic center is equipped with a swimming pool, saunas and spa. Santa Cristina has a small museum and a 16th-century castle, an outdoor skating rink and a paragliding school. In Selva there is a sports center, a tennis center Tennis Center GMA, an ice palace Stadium PR Anives, extreme sports centers - paragliding, rock climbing, winter hiking, etc. In addition, this village has the largest number of entertainment facilities - in the evenings there are pubs, a shooting range, sports bars, discos, bowling alleys, etc.

Local cuisine and wines

Restaurants in Val Gardena will introduce their guests to the best traditions of Tyrolean and Ladin cuisine, rich in meat dishes, and will also offer pizza, spaghetti and risotto typical throughout Italy. The choice of establishments is also quite wide: there are restaurants in every village, many of them are located at hotels - and there are also mountain huts on the slopes where you can have lunch while skiing.

Where to stay

Many hotels in Ortisei, which is considered a family resort, are aimed at quality holidays with children. There are very few hotels in the fabulous Santa Cristina, but here you can truly relax in a quiet and cozy atmosphere. In Selva, the busiest village in the valley, the range of hotels is the most diverse - from modest 2* hotels to expensive, comfortable chalets with spacious rooms, restaurants, wellness centers and swimming pools. In particular, here is the Sporthotel Alpenroyalp Gourmet & Relax 5*, which has been repeatedly recognized as one of the best hotels in the Italian Alps.
